F1 has confirmed it’s reached an agreement with the city of Miami to host a Grand Prix around the Hard Rock Stadium from 2021.

A custom-built track will be built around the stadium, which is the home of the NFL team the Miami Dolphins, and has recently hosted the Miami Open tennis tournament.

In a statement released by Formula 1, the sport’s Managing Director of Commercial Operations Sean Bratches and Vice Chairman and CEO of the Miami Dolphins Tom Garfinkel said: “We are thrilled to announce that Formula One and Hard Rock Stadium have reached an agreement in principle to host the first-ever Formula One Miami Grand Prix at Hard Rock Stadium. With an estimated annual impact of more than $400 million and 35,000 room nights, the Formula One Miami Grand Prix will be an economic juggernaut for South Florida each and every year.

“We are deeply grateful to our fans, elected officials and the local tourism industry for their patience and support throughout this process. We look forward to bringing the greatest racing spectacle on the planet for the first time to one of the world’s most iconic and glamorous regions.”

The event will still need to be given the green light by the Miami-Dade County on 28 October. The city had previously agreed in principal to host a race in Miami Bay, but some raised concerns over the proposed circuit. That race had been due to make its debut this season, but in 2018 it was announced those plans were on hold.

The race already has an official Twitter account (@F1Miami) and a race website (f1mia.com). If given the go-ahead, it would be the second race in the USA, joining the Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in Texas on the calendar.
